WHAT IS SAFETALK?

SafeTalk is an age-appropriate empowerment program for children in kindergarten through 5th grade, presented in schools by Kids In Crisis professional staff and trained volunteers from around our community.

Through discussions and guided role-play, children learn to recognize and respond to potentially dangerous situations, including bullying, interactions with strangers, online dangers, and inappropriate touch. The program is grounded in the nationally recognized Child Assault

The program is grounded in the nationally recognized Child Assault Prevention Program (CAPP) curriculum, delivered through the Assault Prevention Center (ICAP), ensuring that what children learn is proven and effective.

After every presentation, each child has a chance to speak privately and confidentially with a Kids In Crisis counselor. For some children, it’s the first time they find the words, or the courage, to speak up.

“You’re never too far from a safe place or a safe person.”

SAFETALK LAST YEAR:

  • SafeTalk reached 3,129 students/children
  • Children in Kindergarten through 5th grade
  • SafeTalk provided 142 presentations to 161 classes/groups
  • 20+ years of proven prevention education
  • 17 schools/clubs/foundations participated in SafeTalk, including Boys & Girls Club, YMCA, Girl Scouts, and summer camps

How SafeTalk Works:

Kids arrive excited. The program is fully interactive: role-play, skits, and guided discussion. No screens. No worksheets. Just two trusted adults and a classroom of children who quickly realize this is unlike any lesson they’ve had before.

By the end, they know their safety yell. They know the safe distance to keep from a stranger. They know the difference between a secret and a surprise. And they know that if something feels wrong, there is always a safe person they can tell.

Teachers tell us the ripple effect lasts long after we leave.

SafeTalk works because it is volunteer-led and they show up for kids.

Our volunteers are trained by Kids In Crisis staff and paired with experienced presenters. No special background required. Just a belief that every child deserves to feel safe, strong, and free.

If you’d like to give your time, we’d love to hear from you.
