When you call the Kids In Crisis Hotline, you’re not just reaching out to anyone; you’re connected with dedicated outreach workers. These professionals have undergone extensive training to understand and support the unique needs of young individuals when they face difficult situations. Whether it’s dealing with anxiety, family issues, or more severe problems like suicidal thoughts, the staff at this crisis helpline for children and teens are prepared to offer the help needed when it’s needed most. The outreach workers have experience in social work and have received training and preparation for handling real-life crises effectively. This training includes practicing mock calls, focused on suicide intervention, but also de-escalation tactics to ensure readiness and competence during a crisis.

What are the duties of a Helpline worker? 

KIC’s hotline is a lifeline for parents and mental health professionals seeking help for children facing challenges. Each outreach worker has honed their active listening, empathy, and validation skills – crucial tools for assisting distressed callers. The outreach worker will provide information about community resources, offer coping strategies, and offer to connect you with additional services. The outreach workers are committed to empowering parents and children to take positive steps. The outreach workers will arrange in-person meetings to assess needs and determine if KIC’s services are suitable after receiving a call. These personalized interactions involve conversations with parents and children, ensuring a comprehensive understanding.  

 

What can Kids In Crisis’ 24-hour free counseling hotline not do?    

The Kids in Crisis 24-hour free Crisis helpline for children and teens offers immediate support and guidance during times of stress and anxiety. However, there are some limitations to the hotline. Firstly, while outreach workers provide compassionate listening and assistance, they are not medical or legal professionals, so they shine the most as a sounding board and providing resources. The hotline is also not intended for long-term therapy; callers may call and seek ongoing support for persistent issues, but the outreach workers often intervene and offer an outreach meeting to understand better when repeat calls occur. Another limitation is the hotline serves only residents of Connecticut. Out-of-state callers are received and handled with care, but there is often a limit to how much the outreach worker can do.
