On the evening of March 7, 2024, a deep sense of community was felt at Latham Park in Stamford. A candlelight vigil, organized by local groups including Stamford Pride, PFLAG Stamford, and the city itself, brought together hearts and voices in memory of Nex Benedict, a non-binary 16-year-old whose life was tragically cut short in Owasso, Oklahoma.

Kids In Crisis’ Lighthouse Program was there as part of our mission to support LGBTQ youth. We supported the organizers and brought along participants and mobilizers for this important day. Our presence was a testament to our commitment to LGBTQ youth and the issues they face.

Polly Morrow, a leader among volunteers for Kids In Crisis and a board member of Stamford Pride, spearheaded the vigil. Her swift action to gather the community to honor Nex and support LGBTQ youth exemplifies her leadership and the spirit of advocacy that Kids In Crisis stands by.

Phoebe Oler, our Lighthouse Program Manager, reflected on why events like this are so important: “This vigil was vital for supporting trans youth in our community. Events like this bring allies together to show all LGBTQ youth the love and support they don’t always feel in our communities. These events also remind us of the work still needed to ensure safety and acceptance for all LGBTQ individuals. I was deeply moved by the community’s outpouring of love Thursday night.”

Over 50 individuals came together, a very real display of solidarity. It reminded us that in times of darkness, our community stands together in support and kindness, as noted by local resident Izabela Novak, 16. She said Benedict’s death hit her especially hard because “it’s horrifying that something like that happened to somebody my age and any age at all.”

The evening reminded us of the crucial role Lighthouse plays in the lives of LGBTQ youth. The support of our donors and volunteers enables us to continue this vital work. It allows us to show up, stand up, and light up the way for those who need it most.
