Empowering LGBTQ+ Youth: The Triumphs of the Lighthouse Program in 2023

Under the umbrella of Kids In Crisis, the Lighthouse program has been a beacon of hope and support for LGBTQ+ youth. In 2023, the program made amazing strides, thanks to the support of individuals and organizations committed to making a difference in these young lives.

Expanding Reach and Impact
The program served youth across Stamford, Westport, Wilton, Darien, and New Canaan. With plans to extend services to Ridgefield in 2024, the Lighthouse family is growing and reinforcing our commitment to the LGBTQ+ community.

Enriching Community Engagement
A key element of the program’s success is its active community engagement. Events like the “Intersection of Queer and Creativity” panel and “A Night of Queer History” were significant highlights. Collaborations with Wilton Pride and the Wilton Historical Society for the “Night of Queer History,” as well as hosting Queer Game Night and Movie Night at Toquet Hall, have fostered a sense of belonging and understanding. Participation in various Pride events and health fairs further amplified the program’s outreach.

First Successful Fundraising Event
2023 marked the initiation of fundraising efforts with the successful Tea Dance event in September. Preparations for the 2024 Tea Dance are already underway, promising to be another milestone in the program’s journey.

The Tangible Impact of Support
Your support has been instrumental in tackling the heightened risks faced by LGBTQ+ youth, including homelessness, discrimination, and mental health challenges. The SafeHaven emergency shelter and the 24-hour Crisis HelpLine, which assisted 670 individuals this year, testify to the difference your contributions have made.

The Voice of Our Youth
The real success of the Lighthouse program is reflected in the voices of the youth it supports:

  • “Lighthouse has given me a place to grow into myself and my queerness. It really boosted my confidence.”
  • “Lighthouse is a fun place to do things and break up the week.”
  • “Lighthouse has been a nice opportunity to spend time with people I enjoy and meeting other queer people.”

These testimonies underscore the importance of the program in providing a safe space for personal growth, social interaction, and mental health support.

Looking Ahead
With the continued support of people, companies, and organizations, Kids In Crisis is poised to dream bigger and reach further. The journey ahead is filled with hope and potential, ensuring every child and teen knows they are not alone.
