Tree."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Denise Qualey &amp; Tracey Blackman<br><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidsincrisis.org\"><em>Kids In Crisis<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children by nature watch and mimic their parents\u2019 behaviors, beliefs and attitudes.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Health conscious parents take pride in modeling good nutrition and exercise for their kids.\u00a0 In doing so, their kids are more likely to adopt similar beliefs about eating well and being active.\u00a0 \u00a0Children whose parents regularly volunteer for and support important causes are more likely to become philanthropic themselves. Oftentimes we see great family traditions carried on for generations.\u00a0 These are examples of positive role modeling, where the apple not falling far from the tree is a good thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, we cannot forget the simple fact that actions speak\nlouder than words, and that our children are paying attention.&nbsp; Parents, who drink alcohol excessively to\nsocialize, relieve stress, or combat boredom, may not realize the impact they\nare having on their children\u2019s beliefs that binge drinking is not only\nacceptable, but necessary.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Children whose parents smoke are more likely\nto smoke. &nbsp;When parents break the law by\nallowing their underage kids to drink, or by abusing prescription medications,\nthey are sending very clear messages that breaking the law is okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do we have to be perfect as parents?&nbsp; Absolutely not.&nbsp; We do have to be self-aware and remain\nconscious of what we\u2019re modeling for our children.&nbsp; And along the way, when as a result of our\nimperfections we misstep, we should take time to recognize our mistakes and\nshow our kids that we can accept responsibility and grow. &nbsp;Parent by example.
