For over 30 years, Kids in Crisis has been providing free,
round-the-clock crisis intervention, counseling and emergency shelter,
prevention programs in local communities and advocacy throughout Connecticut.
Volunteers are vital to fulfilling our mission. Whether you are
interested in volunteering once a year or once a week, during the day or in the
evening, as part of a group or as an individual, we’ll find the volunteer
opportunity that is a perfect fit for you!
Our volunteer opportunities include:
In-house Volunteers
In-house volunteers provide the extra attention and positive role-models that
are crucial to the healing of children and teens residing at our temporary
emergency shelters in Cos Cob. In-house volunteers help with homework,
supervise play, assist at meal time and more.
Requirements & Training: Requires a 2-3 hour weekly commitment –
after 4pm weekdays or on weekends. An interview, one-day training and background
checks are required.
Our next In-house Volunteer Training is Saturday, August 22nd, from 9am -
5pm. Please contact Kristen Tomasiewicz at ktomasiewicz@kidsincrisis.org to
request a volunteer interview and invitation to the training.
SafeTalk Volunteers
We rely on volunteers to help facilitate our SafeTalk workshops to school-age
children throughout Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk, Ridgefield,
Stamford, Weston, Westport and Wilton. As part of this anti-bullying,
anti-violence prevention program, SafeTalk Volunteers assist program
facilitators with simple role-plays, discussions and distribution of
materials.
Requirements & Training: Most presentations are given during school
hours (presentations are occasionally given during after-school hours). An
interview, two-day training and background checks are required.
Our next SafeTalk Training is Thursday, September 17th & Friday,
September 18th, from 9am - 3pm (volunteers must attend both days). Please
contact Kristen Tomasiewicz at ktomasiewicz@kidsincrisis.org to
request a volunteer interview and invitation to the training.
Additional volunteer opportunities:
Office Volunteers Volunteers are often needed to assist
with administrative tasks & other office tasks, on a regular or as-needed
basis.
Event Volunteers This is the ideal volunteer opportunity
for individuals who would like to pitch in “once in a while” for agency events
and fundraisers, or for those who simply enjoy volunteering for events!
There are opportunities to assist with event planning and preparation or “on the
day of” for one or more of our events throughout the year.
Fundraising Volunteers Some folks just know how “to
ask.” If you’re one of those people that is ready, willing and able to
raise money and solicit donations, we’d love to have you do so on our
behalf. Whether it’s securing just the right item for our silent auction,
selling journal ads, or seeking monetary or in-kind donations for our residents,
there are plenty of opportunities to put your talents to work!
Dinner Donors Preparing and dropping off dinner for our
residents (12 – 14 per house) on a regular or occasional basis is a tremendous
help to the Agency. Dinner donations save the Agency money and allow our
counselors to spend additional, much needed time with our residents that might
otherwise be spent preparing dinner.
Because you are not working directly with our residents, no training is
required to donate dinner, though donations must be coordinated in
advance with Kristen Tomasiewicz at ktomasiewicz@kidsincrisis.org
or 203-622-6556. When possible, calling at least a week in
advance to schedule a dinner donation is especially appreciated.
Other Opportunities We have many more opportunities to
volunteer with Kids in Crisis. Do you have a special skill such as graphic
design or PR? Do you love to garden? Let’s talk about your skills
& availability and see how we might best use your talents!
Teen Volunteers The Kids in Crisis Youth Corps is a group
of High School volunteers from throughout Fairfield County who are dedicated to
furthering the agency’s mission. They plan activities for our youngest
residents (newborn – age 12); volunteer for special events; organize
fundraisers, clothing, food and toy drives; raise awareness about Kids in
Crisis, and much more! The Youth Corps meets the first Thursday of
every month at the Depot in Darien from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm. We plan activities
for our residents (activities are two hours, typically on Saturdays from 11 am –
1 pm), develop fundraising & awareness-raising activities and work on other
agency-related projects. You can download our Youth Corps
Application, complete the application and forward it to
Kids in Crisis.
