Kids Helping Kids
Having a birthday party?  Tired of buying trinkets and candy for goody bags?     Kids in Crisis has the perfect thing: donation certificates made in honor of those attending.  When you make a donation to Kids in Crisis and select Kids Helping Kids, simply enter the number of certificates you need in the message section and you will be mailed donation slips to give to each party guest.  This is a great way to help support the critical programs provided by Kids in Crisis, and teach children the importance of giving.

Volunteer of the Month

The Stanwich School has been named Volunteers of the Month by Kids in Crisis for June 2009.  Each year, The Stanwich School Advisory Group, led by faculty advisor Jerome Murphy, selects a commitment and compassion project for the coming academic term.  After researching and interviewing several local organizations, the group chose to support Kids in Crisis beginning in Fall 2008.  Since then, Stanwich School students have made dinner on a regular basis for the Agency’s Teen House residents – no small task, cooking for up to 15 people – including meal planning, shopping, cooking and delivering the food.  Additionally, the students have hosted several fundraisers to support other needs at the emergency shelter, including a bake sale and make-your-own-sundae fundraiser to purchase gift cards to several popular area restaurants, a wonderful treat for children staying in the Kids in Crisis temporary shelters.

“Our children quickly became invested in the year-round project to help Kids in Crisis,” says Jerome Murphy.   “They quickly came together to work for a greater cause. Their efforts were bolstered by the kindness of the staff at Kids in Crisis; their commitment to improving the lives of children is inspiring to all of us.”  According to Mr. Murphy, the group’s support of Kids in Crisis reinforced an important lesson for each of the students:  “It often doesn’t take much to improve the lives of others.  Working as a group, you can accomplish and, at the same time, learn so much about yourselves in the process.”  Because this volunteer effort centered on helping other kids, “our kids felt more invested in the project.  As a result, they were willing to dedicate more time to the volunteer activities.  Their cooperation throughout the process was exceptionally strong.”

Why I Give
Donors Rosemarie and Phillip Lanard have supported Kids in Crisis since 2006.  Insight asked them to share the reasons they choose to give to Kids in Crisis, as well as their thoughts on the work of Kids in Crisis.

How did you first come to know Kids in Crisis?
Like many organizations, McGraw-Hill matches most charitable donations made by its employees.  One year, I decided to look at locally-based not-for-profits to see what was listed.  I saw Kids in Crisis, visited the website to learn more and was drawn to its purpose and mission immediately.  When I talked about Kids in Crisis with my husband, we both quickly realized that we might have found our “charitable partner.”

I made a donation that McGraw-Hill matched, but wanted to take our involvement to a deeper level.  I called Shari Shapiro and we had a terrific conversation.  I loved her passion for the kids, her energy around making a real difference in the community, and her desire to get to know us better too.  We set up time to meet in-person and she gave us a tour of the facilities.

Our hearts were warmed – my initial instinct was so right – this would be the charity we’d like to bring into our lives to help make a powerful difference in others’ lives.  The personal connection was so important to us and Shari and her colleagues continue to build on to this each day.
